Leeks are in the ground for quite a long time and do take a fair amount of work, but they areally are worth all that effort; so its not surprising they will be found on almost every vegetable plot. The gardeners choice of leek, Giant Winter is an excellent late variety producing heavy thick stems that will stand in the ground for a long time. Leeks make a tasty side dish to any meal, especially when sliced, boiled and topped with a cheese sauce. Seed Count: 500 WHEN TO SOW March to April WHERE TO SOW Sow the seeds thinly in a well prepared seed bed in shallow drills 1.5cm (3/4") deep in short rows. Can also be sown earlier in trays under glass for exhibition work. WHAT TO DO NEXT Thin seedlings as they grow to 4-5cm (2-3") apart. When the seedlings are about the thickness of a pencil, they should be lifted and transplanted. Make a hole 15cm (6") deep with a rod, trim off the ends of the roots and leaves, drop into the hole and fill with water. Do not fill the hole with soil. MATURITY Late October to January HANDY TIP As leeks are available fresh when vegetables are in short supplies, try using Leeks in place of onion in recipes.
