Behind the scenes at Welland Valley Feeds
The “Stay at home, Stay Safe” message is certainly being well observed by many of our customers and this in turn has changed the dynamics of our business. The shop floor team, in addition to their normal tasks of keeping shelves replenished, clean and stock rotated are now supporting the online shopping demands. The web orders are picked ready for collection and when customers arrive, to keep safe, we bring the goods out to you. We are so pleased to have had such excellent feedback from this service. For those not wishing to use online ordering, the office is busier than ever with order processing from customers and getting these processed in a timely manner for them to be either collected or delivered. For collections we ask for at least an hours’ notice. If you have not tried the click and collect service, give it a go! The majority of our 1000’s of products can now be seen online.
Deliveries – demand for our local delivery service has also increased especially for those self-isolating. The warehouse team pick the orders and the drivers aim to fulfil all deliveries, but we have at times felt very challenged (especially when the delightful snow arrived and that coupled with staff self-isolating were thrown into the mix) A massive thank you to those very understanding customers who accepted later deliveries or turned out to collect if they could. We have HFM playing in the store and constantly here them saying support your local business. We do feel supported and really appreciate it. Thank you.
As we had not produced a January flyer, we did not have the opportunity to share with you the retirement of Sue. Many of you will have had a cheeky chuckle with Sue on the phone as she took telephone orders – she was number one telephone pick up. She decided after 11 years with us to hang up the phone and devote time to enjoying her yard and horses, being on the other side of the fence! We wish her all the very best in her retirement and thank her for years of support and loyalty to the business. We know she will be back at some stage for holiday cover!
We also said goodbye to Chris who worked in the warehouse and yard. He was always ready to help customers, suppliers, and staff alike and although only with us for a year, he was a very welcome team player. His new workplace is very lucky to have him on board.

Cushing’s Disease in Horses
Important to:- Monitor Weight
- Give Balanced Diet
- Look After Teeth
- Entice Appetite
Equine Cushing’s disease – correct name Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) – is a hormonal condition that’s common in older horses. The middle section of the pituitary gland becomes enlarged and overactive, causing the release of a hormone called ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). This triggers excessive cortisol release from the adrenal glands, which then causes problems throughout the body.
Most affected horses are aged 15 years or older, with the average age being 19 years. However, it has been diagnosed in some horses as young as 9 years.
Recognising the Signs
As your horse ages, it’s worth knowing what to look for, as the earlier you catch it, the better the outcome. These are the most common signs:
- Laminitis.
- Long coat and delayed shedding, also curly coat especially around legs
- Loss of muscle over the back and hindquarters.
- Fat deposits affecting the eyes, crest of neck, base of tail and sheath.
- Increased sweating, even if hair growth is normal.
- Increased drinking and urination.
- Lethargy and/or reduced performance.
- Suppressed immune system, leading to secondary infections (eg. sinusitis, skin infections, hoof abscesses) and parasitic conditions.
Diagnosing Cushing’s
If your horse is showing signs, your vet can test for hormone levels. Their diagnosis will take in the horse’s history, signs shown, and the test results. As this is a progressive disease, test results are less reliable in the early days. Also, hormone levels also vary seasonally. It is often the above signs that complete the picture.
Managing a Cushing’s Horse
Early diagnosis and treatment with medication that quiets the overactive pituitary can slow the disease’s progression. Pergolide is a tablet that can be administered daily, with most owners seeing improvements within 3 months.
This leads to improved quality of life for Cushing’s horses, while lengthening life in your precious older horse.

Gastric Upsets in Dogs

Most dog owners have encountered canine gastroenteritis at some point. This common condition is when your dog experiences diarrhoea, sometimes with vomiting.
‘Gastro’ can be caused by:
- Eating food that’s raw or has gone off.
- Eating items that are inedible and/or cause an obstruction.
- Sensitivity to particular food ingredients.
- Viruses or parasites.
- Prolonged use of certain medications.
- Intestinal ulcers or growths.
Acute gastro comes on suddenly and often goes away by itself, but may sometimes worsen. Chronic gastro may continue for weeks or months, and can be tough to resolve.
Signs of Gastro
You may see one or more of these signs, even if your dog appears otherwise normal.
- Soft stools that then become watery.
- Mucus in the stool.
- ‘Explosive’ bowel movements.
- Stools that are tarry or dark.
- Your dog may be restless, while lacking energy generally.
- Abdominal tension and pain.
- Blood in the stool (appears black or bright red).
- Signs of nausea (drooling, frequent mouthing/swallowing).
- Vomiting.
Contacting Your Vet
Your dog should be seen by a vet if you see bright red or blackened blood in the stool, or if the gastroenteritis doesn’t resolve within 24 hours. This is especially the case for puppies, small breed geriatric dogs, who may dehydrate and weaken quickly.
Home Care
You can make changes at home to help your dog. Always check these with your vet first, as each animal is individual.
- A bland diet, such as chicken or white fish and rice, helps the intestines to settle.
- Pumpkin and sweet potato are digestible sources of fibre.
- Small regular meals won’t over fill the intestine.
- Probiotics will help restore healthy gut flora.
- Rehydrate with an electrolyte supplement in the water.
- Rest your dog to let them recover for a few days.
- Reintroduce regular food gradually.
- For chronic cases, consider low fat diets, and specially formulated food.
Gastroenteritis is distressing for your dog and for you. Fortunately, for most, a few changes in diet can help you to get on top of the problem.

Managing Twin Lamb Disease
Twin lambs are a delightful sight as Spring sweeps across the land. It’s not all wagging tails though, for multiple lambs can present a health risk to ewe and her lambs, with a condition known as Twin Lamb Disease.
This disease affects:- Ewes in late pregnancy or with twin lambs.
- Early lambing flocks when pasture is poor.
- Ewes feeding on new green pasture high in water and low in dry matter and nutrients.
- Ewes that stop eating when stressed, i.e. during extreme weather or untreated foot problems.
What Causes this Disease?
This disease occurs when the ewe’s nutritional intake is less than the unborn lambs’ needs in the last 6-7 weeks of pregnancy. Without extra nutrition, her blood glucose drops and her own body fat is broken down instead, causing liver overload. Pregnancy toxemia – Twin Lamb Disease – follows, with reduced calcium levels and milk production (milk fever) leading to poor lamb growth and higher mortality.
Signs of Twin Lamb Disease
In the early stages, the pregnant ewe separates herself from the flock. As her condition worsens, she may shake, circle, twist her neck, lift her head high and grind her teeth. She may lose her appetite. Without veterinary attention, blindness and inability to stand can follow, with lambing problems leading to suffering and even death.
Preventing the Disease
Ewes carrying multiple lambs need to be identified through scanning, so they can be fed roughly double their usual energy and protein in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. Propylene glycol (Glycerin) products that generate glucose should also be given 2-3 weeks before and after lambing. Palatable feeds containing vitamins and trace elements will help to stimulate appetite and liver function.
The good news is that with awareness and careful monitoring, Twin Lamb Disease is avoidable, meaning more healthy ewes and lambs in the fields this Spring.
