Tis the season... To rug your dogs

We’re well and truly on our way into winter. With the weather on the turn and temperatures dropping, we need to consider protecting our dogs from the winter weather extremes. As dogs still need As dogs still need exercising, come rain or shine, it’s important to make sure they are as comfortable as possible whilst out and about. Your dog may be reluctant to go out in the cold, especially if it’s raining too! This is where using a dog coat may be beneficial, not only to keep them warm and dry, but to also encourage them to go outside too! Learning to judge your dog’s temperature will be a big asset when deciding whether to put a coat on or not. You can tell if your dog is cold by watching their behaviour, if they are trembling or shaking after being outside for a while it means that they are probably feeling the cold. Their mobility may also be affected, they may become clumsier or ‘stiff looking’ as their muscles contract to try and cope. Their usually wet nose may become dry too.

Top tips

Older & younger dogs are more likely to feel the cold. Dogs with ailments such as arthritis will be more affected by the colder weather. Long haired and double coated dogs are less likely to need coats than short haired dogs.
