Ailsa Craig produces large globe shaped bulbs with a mild flavour beneath golden straw coloured skin. This variety makes for a good exhibition onion but does not store for long periods and should be used in early winter. Seed Count: 400 WHEN TO SOW January to April WHERE TO SOW Early sowings in trays under glass at 14C, only lightly covering with compost. Later sowings in the growing site 1cm (1/2") deep in rows 30cm (12") apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Glasshouse seedlings should be pricked off into trays when about 15cm (6") tall, 5cm (2") apart. Harden off in growing site 15cm (6") apart in early April. Outdoor sowings should be thinned in two stages until spacings of 15cm (6") between plants is achieved. MATURITY August to September HANDY TIPS Onions require a very fertile soil. Dig the Onion bed in the Autumn incorporating manure or compost.
