For your garden

So, get outside and creocote those fences, trellis work, garden sheds, or other wooden structures with our 4 litre or 20 litre dark brown or light brown CREOCOTE.

What to feed your poultry

Have you ever heard the phrase “Rare as hens’ teeth”? That’s because hens don’t have teeth! It’s also one of the reasons why you should feed your poultry grit – to help them digest their food. Insoluble grit or flint grit is used which lodges in a strong muscular organ called the gizzard and basically performs a grinding function to assist with digestion.

There is a second type of grit, Oyster shell, which is a soluble form. This provides your poultry with a source of calcium. The reason the hen requires calcium is because this mineral is the main component of egg shells. Formulated food in the form of layers mash or layers pellets are well-researched and balanced products so they usually have satisfactory levels of calcium. If you have high producing hybrid hens who lay a vast number of eggs, these will benefit from the addition of Oyster shell grit to the diet – the number and quality of eggs produced will be maintained.

Laminitis in horses

This is an extremely complex and painful condition. It is mainly found in horses, ponies, donkeys. It affects the feet of the animal with weakening of the sensitive tissues (laminae) that bond the main bone in the hoof (pedal bone) to the hoof wall.
PREVENTION is better than cure. Given that laminitis is such a complex and painful condition for your animal and expensive economically and psychologically for you, the owner, the best course of action is to adopt gold standards of dietary management (preventing obesity) and exercise. Checking your horse’s feet are properly balanced, keeping hooves trimmed and shoed regularly and checking frequently for signs of laminitis by observing the horse walking on hard ground, checking how they turn in a tight circle, checking digital pulses and checking fat score.

TREATMENT – laminitis is an emergency
1. Call your vet, farrier/ trimmer
2. Remove your horse from grass but move as little as possible and support feet first
3. Confine on deep supportive bedding (sand / shavings / wood pellets)
4. Support the feet with boots and pads Styrofoam (under instruction from your vet/farrier)
5. Give pain killers (NSAIDs – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory)
6. Apply cold therapy to the feet (if feet feel hot, ice them)
7. Give a low sugar and starch diet based on grass hay
8. Blood tests and X-rays to diagnose the cause and assess damage to pedal bone
9. Trim hooves and realign any rotation – trimmed by farrier

Flea & Tick Season In Dogs & Cats

What are FLEAS and TICKS

Fleas are tiny parasites that live and feed on animals. They can leap more than 100 times their own body length and have specifically adapted mouth parts that pierce skin and suck blood. Fleas can live on pets for up to 100 days and a female can lay up to 50 eggs every day.

Ticks are tiny parasitic arachnids that attach themselves to animals using hooked moth parts and then suck their blood. They appear as a grey bump that swells as they feed. While feeding ticks regurgitate saliva and blood back in to the animal host, which can transmit diseases.

An infestation of Fleas or Ticks can cause terrible irritation to your pets and potentially endanger their health.

Protect your pets
1. Treat your pets monthly ALL YEAR ROUND – eggs, larvae and pupae survive for many months
2. Wash bedding at 60o regularly; vacuum furniture, floors, skirting boards thoroughly to remove flea eggs, larvae, and pupae which can hatch and jump on to your pet keeping the circle of infestation going
3. Empty the vacuum cleaner after each use to prevent the eggs and larva developing
4. Use a vet recommended household and pet bedding flea spray – treat the house and the pet
5. Only use products for cats on cats, dogs on dogs etc.
