    Tupping Time!

In order to better manage tupping consider using crayons and a harness on tups.

Allocating a marker crayon colour to each ram working in a field shows which rams are working and which ewes he has served. If a ram has not marked any ewes this could indicate potential fertility problems. The use of crayons can also help to forecast lambing dates. By using crayon colours in sequence, it is possible to identify when ewes will lamb and group them in accordance. It can also help to forecast busier periods during lambing when additional labour may be required. Use paler coloured crayons first, such as yellow and then darker crayons for subsequent cycles. This will also enable the identification of barren ewes.

    Late season fly strike

Fly strike is a horrible thing for any flock owner to deal with and can easily be fatal to the sheep if not detected early enough.

Blowflies (metallic green or blue in appearance) lay their white, seed-like eggs in the wool, often at the rear end or around the horn base but it can be anywhere. When the eggs hatch, the maggots will start to eat into the skin and flesh of the sheep.

The blowfly “season” used to be May to September but, with climate change, it can happen before and after this period, so flock owners must be vigilant.

Be prepared and always have the chemicals available to treat fly strike in your medicine cabinet.

    Beware of Foxtails

Foxtails are grasses with seed awns (the foxtail-shaped tip of the grass blade containing seeds). Foxtails have barbed, razor-sharp needles that are extremely dangerous to our dogs. Nature designed them to move in one direction—forward.

Foxtails easily attach themselves and can burrow deeper and deeper with each movement. Foxtails love paws and can easily become embedded (and hidden) between tender toes. They can work their way into ANY part of the body.

Foxtail fragments can easily go up the nose and migrate to the brain. Inhaled foxtails can perforate a lung.

Foxtails that go unnoticed can require surgery to be removed.
