Whilst horse riding has been off the table with COVID-19, the good news is that with competitions & events starting up again in the equine world, we can finally get our horses back out and strutting their stuff! Whether it’s eventing or leisure riding, we have all your travelling essentials here at Welland Valley Feeds.
The cat's teeth, not the cat’s whiskers!
Last August we ran a little article on looking after your dog’s teeth, so it’s only right we should offer the same attention to our feline friends…. especially as it is International Cat Day on Saturday 8th August.
Cats are carnivores and need clean, strong, sharp teeth. They rely on you to help them stay tooth healthy – reducing their risk of infection and tooth loss because of gum disease, tartar / plaque build-up, foul breath, and abscesses. Ninety percent of cats develop dental problems over their lifetime with 70% having periodontal disease by the age of two. More worrying is the possibility of the accumulation of plaque with resultant bacteria leading to more serious infective complications in their lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart.
BRUSHING your cat’s teeth is the gold standard. It will require perseverance with short and positive sessions to get your cat used to the idea! Using a finger or cotton swab, gently massage the gums. Progress to a cat toothbrush (some can be worn over your finger) – with softer bristles and smaller than the ones used for us. Needless to say, they also need their own toothpaste (human stuff upsets their stomach). Just like us, they need to be rewarded for being patient with a treat or play and will help with future brushings.
OTHER AIDS TO DENTAL HEALTH include a well-balanced diet with fibre to help prevent build-up of plaque and ensures a healthy digestive tract. Chew toys, oral gels and dental treats also play a part in ensuring your cats teeth will be as good as the cat’s whiskers!

Can Jimmy Save the Bees?
Eyebrook Bird Feeds, local supplier of fantastic wild bird feed to Welland Valley Feeds are going to be featured in a new three part series presented by Jimmy Doherty this month on Channel 4. Jimmy is on a mission to save the UK’s bees and wants to learn more about what farmers, local government, schools and the general public can do to help his cause. He will also be encouraging the nation to do more in their gardens to provide food and habitat for bees. Welland Valley Feeds has a great variety of habitats and feed to encourage wildlife into your gardens and promote their conservation.

PRUNING, PLANNING and PUTTING YOUR FEET UP
To help your plant thrive and reduce its risk of disease, remove the lower level leaves. This allows more room for the leaves above. They then stay drier and free from soil containing pathogens.
WVF have 14 different varieties of tomato seeds for sowing January – April and harvesting July – October
Vitax Organic Control 2 in 1 Plant Invigorator
Cleans and strengthens flowers, fruit and vegetables ability to withstand stress from pest and disease attack – spray monthly during spring and summer. Outdoor use / under glass.
2. Plan ahead for gardening leave
If you want to ensure your plants are watered and you do not want to rely on neighbours, invest in a growbag waterer. You can control the amount and frequency of water your plants need so they remain hydrated (without becoming waterlogged) once set up.
3. Lop back your lavender
Prune back about a third of your lavender plant using sharp, clean pruning shears after its flowering period. This promotes new growth. Cuttings can be placed in a cold frame in moist, well-drained soil.
4. Wind down for winter
If you want to harvest in hardy vegetables (like broccoli, cabbage and Brussel sprouts) throughout the winter months, August is the month to plant them into a cultivated, open, free-draining site.
5. Hedging
August is the time to give your hedge its final trim. Garden birds should have left their nests and the hedge will soon stop growing. It is also time to prune any late summer-flowering shrubs and wisteria.
6. Preserves
Fresh fruit tastes wonderful but many crops (gooseberries, onions, tomatoes, plums, damsons) can be used to make pleasurable pickles, juicy jams and just-so jellies – these can be savoured throughout the coming months.
